Sometimes you know you need a new job because you’re unhappy. Some work in industries that are constantly downsizing. Sometimes you just need more money. And then sometimes you know you need a new job because the owner’s nephew wants yours.
Do you know what to do when you sense it’s time to move on?
There is no one way to make this transition but there are some important things to consider.
First take care of the present. Don’t mouth off to coworkers about your plans. It’s going to cause trouble, it’s counterproductive, and it does nothing to help you.
Instead:
- Talk to close friends and family.
- Assess what things you like and what you dislike about your current situation.
- Finish strong and do a good job while you plan–if not for anyone else but yourself.
Gather your resources. We all know you need a resume. Perfect it.
But don’t forget these other important pieces:
- Build up your LinkedIn profile.
- Write a two-paragraph bio.
- Speak with your 3 references about your plans.
- Gather 2 recommendations in writing.
- List 5 measurable accomplishments that you can speak about in your next interview.
- If applicable tighten up portfolio and all work samples.
Tap into your network. If you’ve neglected it, then start now. Instead of worrying about what you haven’t done, DO something.
Do the following:
- Make 2 meetings per week for coffee: industry professionals, friends, colleagues, anyone who will talk for 15 minutes.
- Check your emails to see any you have dropped the ball on. Pick that ball up again and reach out.
- Identify possible advisers and mentors and write to them. Ask for advice first, not favors.
Lastly do your research. Find out which companies are hiring, which ones you want to work at, and who the players at each are. Check out their websites, social media, and Google results.
Don’t panic and look inward more than usual to find out if and when you need a new job. If you believe you do, take action, don’t just sit there coming up with more reasons you hate your current situation. Become the change you need. Then make a move.
Never burn bridges! Even if you are considering leaving your current job, maintain good relationships with everyone even if it is a struggle. You never know how burning bridges may effect you or who you may run into later in life.
Great advice, thanks for sharing!
